Chapter Twelve

Jett

“When you said set an extra plate you could have given me a warning about who was coming to dinner.” Benny hid her smile behind her napkin. I couldn’t see her mouth, but her eyes were all wrinkled up at the corners, and I’d know her long enough to be able to tell when she was having fun at my expense.

“Jett, if I would have said Jared was coming to dinner, you would have done something to him. You can’t help yourself. You two and your pranking, I can’t even keep up with it.”

We’d eaten dinner in relative silence, passing small talk amongst each other, but now I was clearing the dishes and finally pointing out the elephant in the room. I locked eyes with said elephant and he winked at me.

You old son of a bitch.

He smiled. I couldn’t see his mouth, but his beard quivered, so I knew he was making fun of me. Asshole.

“You got some questions, girl?” Jared fixed Jewel with a pointed stare. “Does it feel good to be back on the mountain with your mate?”

Jewel had been taking a drink of water but sputtered and coughed it back up into her glass. “What?”

“That’s coming in kind of hot, isn’t it, old man?” Delia snagged the plate I’d been clearing and I realized I’d had it raised, ready to chuck at his grizzled gray head.

“I’m just going to go ahead and take over this part, thank you. Please don’t brain the guests.” Delia took over clearing the table, placing the dishes in a bus bin on top of a four wheeled cart. “Uncle Jared, can you not antagonize on purpose?”

It drove me nuts when she called him Uncle Jared. I was pretty sure she wasn’t his niece. Pretty sure.

“What? Are you going to sit here and tell me you two don’t have a bond? Because I have to say, you can ignore it if you want to but I can see it, plain as day. It’s weak, and a bit frayed around the edges, but it still exists.”

“You can see a bond?” Jewel sounded hopeful and my ears perked at her question.

“I can see a lot of things. Like, I can see a power inside you that I couldn’t see ten years ago. I can see the bond you have with Jett—it’s a bright red cord stretched tight between the two of you. Starts right here.” Jared pointed to the space on his chest next to where his heart was, probably, and he looked from Jewel to me, then back to Jewel again. “And I see you’re missing some pieces. And you came back here after all this time to get those pieces. Am I right?”

Jesus, he was really coming in hot.

“No sense wasting time, boy. Not with what’s going on around here lately.”

Stop reading my mind, old man.

“Stop shouting your thoughts at me and I will.”

“You guys are bickering and confusing Jewel.” Delia finished clearing away the last of the dinner dishes and pushed the cart over by the kitchen door.
